The Scottish Government has committed to consult this year on phasing out cages for laying hens and gamebirds. However, the consultation will not include farrowing crates for mother pigs, despite their 2021-2022 Programme for Government commitment to do so.
Farrowing crates inflict significant suffering upon sows, who are unable to walk or even turn around in these extremely confining crates.
Please send a letter to Minister for Agriculture and Connectivity, Jim Fairlie, to urge the Government to consult on phasing out farrowing crates.
