What is the guga hunt?
The guga hunt is the killing of young gannets (known locally as "guga'") on an uninhabited island north of Lewis. They are ripped from their nests using a pole and then bludgeoned to death, causing fear and distress to the guga, their parents, and other nearby birds.
The hunt causes widespread disturbance on the island, and adult birds may be prevented from returning to their nests and feeding their young, which can lead to other chicks starving to death.
Centuries ago, the hunt was carried out to provide food for the community, but now continues in the name of "tradition".
It is cruel, archaic and needless. Tradition can not excuse cruelty. We must stop the hunt and we need your help.
We will be bringing our campaign to MSPs in the coming months and we want to show them just how strongly people across Scotland back an end to the guga hunt.
Please, in a sentence or two in the box below, let them know why YOU want this cruel practice to end.
